Sustainability and Efficiency Codes and Standards

ANSI/ASHRAE/IES/USGBC Standard 189.1-2014, Standard for the Design of High-Performance Green Buildings

189.1 provides total building sustainability guidance for designing, building, and operating high-performance green buildings. From site location to energy use to recycling, this standard sets the foundation for green buildings by addressing site sustainability, water use efficiency, energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality (IEQ), and the building's impact on the atmosphere, materials and resources.

Activity is currently centered on re-formatting the standard to provide base-line mandatory requirements along with “stretch goal” type requirements.

Energy Efficient Design

ASA participates in the ASHRAE Committees for 90.1 Energy Standard for Buildings Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings and 90.2 Energy-Efficient Design of Low-Rise Residential Buildings

WE-Stand

The Water Efficiency and Sanitation Standard (WE•Stand) is published by the International Association of Plumbing Officials (IAPMO). ASA currently participates on the following task groups which are initiating work beginning in November 2018:

  • Premise Water Supply System Design Task Group
  • Alternate Water Sources Task Group
  • Water Efficiency and Conservation Task Group

ASHRAE 188 Legionellosis: Risk Management for Building Water Systems

This standard provides minimum Legionellosis risk management requirements for the design, construction, commissioning, operation, maintenance, repair, replacement and expansion of new and existing buildings and their associated (potable and non-potable) water systems and components.

Joint Committee on Prevention of Injury and Disease Associated with Building Water Systems

The NSF JC is currently working on the development of NSF 444 - Prevention of Disease and Injury Associated with Building Water Systems.

U.S. TAG for ISO PC 316, Water Efficient Products – Rating

ASA is a member of the U.S. Technical Advisory Committee (TAG) responsible for the development of the US position on the development of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard for water efficient products.
