Materials Market Digest: About the Author, Jim Olsztynski

Jim Olsztynski (pronouced ol-stin-skee) has covered the plumbing-heating-cooling-piping (PHCP) and industrial pipe-valve-fitting (PVF) industry as a write and editor since 1977, when he first joined the staff of Supply House Times as associate editor.  He was founding editor of Plumbing and Mechanical magazine in 1984, and until retiring in 2011, Jim held simultaneous positions as editor of Supply House Times, editorial director of Plumbing and Mechanical and consulting editor of PM Engineer magazines, which are all owned by BNP Media Company.

Additionally, Jim wrote a syndicated monthly column, entitled "Smart Business," that appeared in several magazines in BNP Media's Construction Division.  These included National Driller, Roofing Contractor, Walls & Ceilings and SNIPS.

Jim also published or supervised publication of several e-newsletters produced by BNP Media's Plumbing Group.  From 1993 until 2003, he published a multiple award-winning, paid-subscription newsletter, PHC Profit Report.  He also has authored two educational courses published by the ASA Education Foundation and National Association of Wholesaler-DistributorsEssentials of Profitable Wholesale-Distribution and Essentials of Profitable Inside Sales in Distribution.

Throughout his career, Jim has received more than two dozen awards for editorial excellence, including the Meritorious Service Award from the PVF Roundtable; an Apex Grand Award for Best Newsletter in the Nation; the Ned Godfrey "Body of Work" Award, Robert F. Boger Award for Excellence in Construction Journalism; and five-time recipient of the T. Randolph Russell Award for Best Constrution Newsletter - all from the Construction Writers Association, as well as numerous BNP Media awards for editorial excellence, sales excellence and business creativity.

Jim has served as a keynote speaker at dozens of PHCP-PVF indusrty events, and he conducted seminars on business and promotional writing, small business marketing and various indsutry-related topics.  He appeared on camera as plumbing industry spokesperson for the History Channel's Modern Marvels program, entitled "Arteries of Civilization:  The History of Plumbing."  The episode first aired in 1997 and has been rerun several times each year since.  Jim also assisted with the production of that episode, which grew out of Plumbing & Mechanical's "History of Plumbing" series, which ran in the magazine for ten years during the 1980s and 1990s.

Jim's knowledge of the industry led to his being recruited to write organizational histories for several PHCP industry groups, including the Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA), Wisconsin PHCC, Mechanical Contractors of New Jersey and the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Information Bureau.  He is also a past president of the Construction Writers Association and a member since the 1980s.
